Hygiene Maintenance & Comprehensive Exam

PATIENT REVIEWS

The doctors of Atlantic Dental Group are pleased to be able to offer dental services to every age group and every member of your family from comprehensive to esthetically-driven treatments. Prevention and education are important in our practice, and we take seriously your need to understand how to take charge of and protect your own oral health. We are always available to answer questions about your dental needs and the services we can provide for your ideal treatment. We offer a wide range of services to meet the needs of your entire family.

Prevention should serve as a lifestyle pattern for total health, not the least of which is dental health. Prevention in dentistry leads to improved long-term oral health and reduced dental costs. It encourages a bright smile, fresh breath, and an overall good feeling of personal security. Prevention is your insurance policy toward a healthier, pain-free, debt-free lifestyle.

Our dental hygienist can provide excellent services to assist in the maintenance of your overall dental health. Your cooperation with her can serve to increase your knowledge of your present oral condition.

Our 5 Phase Comprehensive Exam

Oral Cancer Screening: If you are a tobacco or smokeless tobacco user, you stand an increased chance of developing oral cancer. More than 8,000 deaths were attributed to oral cancer in the past year. We are committed to the prevention of oral cancer through the early identification of pre-cancerous conditions, and provide oral cancer screenings at each preventive care appointment.

Periodontal Examination: Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in the United States. Your doctor will examine your gum tissues to ensure that gum disease is detected in its early stages. Because bone loss is a significant consideration in determining the outcome of cosmetic treatment, we take the health of your gum and bone tissues very seriously.

Tooth-by-Tooth Examination: At Atlantic Dental Group, we establish a baseline for where you are at your first visit, noting any cracks, cavities, crookedness or other tooth-by-tooth issues. Establishing a baseline allows us to monitor any changes in your oral health.

Aesthetic Consultation: While our overall goal is to maintain and improve your oral health, oftentimes, patients wish to improve the cosmetic appearance of their smile. An aesthetic consultation or “smile assessment” allows us to review services that may provide you more confidence in your smile.

Occlusal Examination: The forces of your bite can sometimes affect the positioning of your jaw and teeth. Through minor polishing of the enamel surfaces or smoothing fillings of the teeth, our doctors can help redistribute and redirect the biting forces. Adjustments to chewing surfaces can often eliminate headaches that occur as a result of irregular biting patterns.

Dental disease is a silent invader, presenting itself in various forms (puffy, bleeding gums, cavities, oral cancer, abscesses). Although your mouth may appear to be in good health at this time, stresses, body changes, life changes, medications, illness, and age can tax your immune system. Maintaining regular re-care appointments with your dental hygienist and follow-ups with your dentist offers you the assurance that any problems regarding your oral care will be addressed immediately.

Regular Prophylaxis: These important appointments allow your doctor and your hygienist to monitor your oral health and clean under your gum line where the toothbrush cannot reach. They also help promote healthy gums and teeth by removing the plaque that causes decay and gum infection, and educating you about prevention.

Our dental hygienist can provide excellent services to assist in the maintenance of your overall dental health. Your cooperation with her can serve to increase your knowledge of your present oral condition. When you keep your appointment with your hygienist, the following benefits

will result:

Our dental hygienist will customize a personal home and preventive maintenance program for you, and inform you of those dental products which are appropriate for your particular needs. You will be instructed in the proper methods of tooth brushing, flossing, and using adjunctive dental health devices.

Your entire mouth will be thoroughly and carefully examined for gum disease, growths, lesions, and any abnormalities that might affect your general health.

Your teeth will be cleaned and polished to remove plaque and tartar both above and below the gum line, eliminating bacteria that lead to cavities, bad breath, and gum disease.

Fluoride will be applied to teeth to prevent decay (for children), and root sensitivity/root cavities (for adults).

Sealants can be easily applied to the chewing surfaces of children’s teeth to protect against future decay.
