A closer look at wisdom teeth
Roots are shorter and bone is less dense in younger patients, which makes the procedure quicker and the recovery shorter. That is the reason for the usual timing rather than any rule about age.
Patients from Kure Beach
Kure Beach has the oldest resident profile in New Hanover County. A third of the town is 65 or older, and barely one in ten residents is under 18.
Extractions in older patients need planning around medications, particularly blood thinners and bone-density drugs. We review the whole medication list before scheduling anything surgical.
Thirty-two minutes each way is the reason we plan Kure Beach treatment in as few appointments as the clinical work allows.
The dental needs here skew heavily toward restorative and prosthetic work rather than preventive care for children.
Fort Fisher and the aquarium bring the visitors; the year-round community is small, settled and largely retired.
We see patients from across Kure Beach and the surrounding area, including the Kure Beach Pier, Fort Fisher, the NC Aquarium and the 28449 ZIP code.
New Hanover County is the built-out core of the region, growing around one percent a year, with roughly 21 percent of residents over 65 and the highest concentration of employer dental coverage in southeastern North Carolina.
We will tell you honestly whether this is worth doing now or whether it can be watched for a year, and we will say which of your existing work is likely to fail next.
We plan restorative treatment in as few visits as the work allows, because thirty-two minutes each way adds up fast.
You may be a candidate if
- Pain or pressure at the back of the jaw
- Repeated infection or swelling of the gum flap over a partly erupted tooth
- Teeth impacted against the molar in front of them
- Crowding pressure after orthodontic treatment
- A cyst or decay visible on an x-ray
The sequence of appointments
- Panoramic or 3D imagingWe look at root shape and how close the roots sit to the nerve.
- Anesthesia planMost patients choose sedation for this one.
- RemovalAll four in a single appointment is standard.
- Recovery checkWe follow up in the first week.
Afterwards
Plan on three days of taking it easy. Ice for the first 24 hours, soft food, and no straws or smoking for at least three days. Swelling peaks around day two and then improves, which surprises people who expect day one to be the worst.
If getting to follow-up visits is difficult, tell us. We can often combine checks into fewer, longer appointments.
What it costs
Cost depends on how many teeth, whether they are impacted, and the sedation used. Dental plans commonly cover a share of surgical extraction. We give you the estimate before the date is booked, and if your college-age child is on your plan we will confirm the coverage first.
If you are on Medicare, note that it does not cover routine dental treatment. Many supplement plans include a limited dental benefit with an annual cap, and we will check yours before quoting anything.

Questions we get asked
What age is best?
Late teens to early twenties, when roots are not fully formed. Removal is straightforward well beyond that, and it is simply a longer recovery.
Will I be swollen for my wedding, graduation, or vacation?
Give yourself a week of clearance. Swelling peaks at 48 hours and looks noticeably better by day four.
